With the further easing of travel restrictions coming into effect, UK surgeons are warning those considering cosmetic and medical procedures abroad.

Bessam Farjo at Farjo Hair InstituteManchester said he feared vulnerable patients would be drawn to cheap cosmetic surgery deals overseas, now the travel industry is opening up. His views were reflected by Naveen Cavale of London True Plastic Surgery.

They say British surgeons have seen a marked drop in revision surgeries in the NHS and the private sector, required for patients who have received ‘shoddy work’ done abroad in the past 18 months. They are now warning patients considering medical tourism deals and deals after the lockdown.

Farjo says, “When performed correctly by a physician in a safe setting, hair transplants can be transformative for the patient. Some overseas destinations have been at the heart of a growing market for cheap medical tourism targeting patients at risk of hair loss. I don’t look forward to seeing poor patients who have had cheap surgery overseas come in with serious health complications. It is important that people considering surgery abroad are fully informed. There are absolutely qualified and reputable surgeons based in medical tourism hot spots like Turkey. I have colleagues based there who are equally upset by the situation and are actively lobbying the Turkish government to put in place stricter regulations to improve ethics and standards. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of cowboys out there so patients need to be extra vigilant when choosing a clinic, in the UK or beyond. “

Cavale adds: “The cost of cheap surgery abroad can be life threatening. If there is a post-operative complication once the patient returns home, it can have devastating effects. If someone has gone overseas for cheap breast augmentation but once back in the UK there is a problem with the blood collecting around the implant which may very well require surgery and urgent care. A surgeon in another country might not be of much help due to the distance, whereas if it was in the UK with an experienced surgeon we would be able to get the patient back quickly to rectify the problem. situation.
