Top five winter skin problems and how to help them with your diet


New data from Google has revealed that there are approximately 10 billion searches for help regarding skin, hair and nail problems every year.

Cold temperatures and low humidity levels make winter a difficult season for the skin.

Our bodies also burn more calories than usual to fight the cold, forcing us to eat more than usual.

Committed to keeping skin healthy, Kyle Crowley, director of new product development at Specialists in Abnormal Custom Meals. has teamed up with skin rejuvenation specialist Dr. Stephen Humble.

They explored how changing eating habits can help improve the five most frequently searched skin conditions on Google this winter.

1. Dry skin, eczema and psoriasis

Dry skin is the most common problem that people face when it comes to winter skin care. Not only are we exposed to extreme weather conditions such as wind, rain and snow, but we often experience micronutrient deficiencies when we modify our diet for comfort.

Vitamin D has been shown to dramatically improve symptoms of skin disorders that cause dry skin, including eczema and psoriasis.

Kyle added: As the UK suffers from an extreme lack of vitamin D during the winter, the use of supplements is an effective way to ensure that our levels are maintained.

Dr Humble added, “It is important to eat a diet rich in a variety of vitamins. Vitamins are molecules essential for the optimal functioning of the body, but they are not made naturally by the liver, so it is “vital” for life that they are consumed in the diet. The skin is considered an organ, like any other organ in the body, and vitamins such as vitamin D are needed to maintain healthy skin.

2. Acne breakouts and oily skin

Acne can be triggered by what we eat and it’s hard to control because we naturally crave carbohydrates and other heavy foods in cold weather.

Experts say that certain foods such as white bread, pasta, white rice, and sugar also raise blood sugar at a faster rate. This causes our body to release insulin and can lead to excess. This excess insulin is said to cause the glands to produce more sebum, which clogs the pores and increases acne and oily residue on the skin.

Kyle and Dr Humble say avoiding these foods is the best way to reduce the risk of developing acne, but since it’s not that easy in the winter, there are other things we can try.

Kyle said, “Ingredients like zinc, vitamins A and E are known to help. Vitamin C is also essential because it acts as a powerful antioxidant. Try to present them as supplement tablets to maintain a constant intake throughout the winter months.

Dr Humble added, “Vitamin C is powerful, but other antioxidants can help too. Others include ferulic acid, phloretin, resveratrol, and vitamin E.

3. Wrinkles and fine lines

Fine lines and wrinkles are commonly searched on Google along with ways to reduce their appearance. Collagen is the protein that keeps our skin plumped. Experts say that maintaining collagen production is essential to help reduce our fine lines and wrinkles.

Kyle said, “Vitamin C is once again the key when it comes to this problem that many of us face. It plays a crucial role in the synthesis of collagen inside the body and helps the two enzymes prolyl hydroxylase and lysyl hydroxylase to stabilize and strengthen the collagen molecules in our body.

Dr Humble added, “Minerals are just as important when it comes to anti-aging, and zinc, copper, and selenium are all great for the skin. They help maintain the metabolic and immune functions of the skin. Without these, we are more prone to aging prematurely.

4. Rosacea

Rosacea is very common in adults in the UK and most commonly affects the nose, cheeks and chin. Kyle and Dr Humble say this condition is often linked to gut health and the imbalance of microorganisms that live there and on the skin.

Kyle said, “Probiotics and foods high in fiber are known to promote the good bacteria that can reduce symptoms of rosacea.”

Dr Humble added, “A diet modification that may include probiotics can reduce rosacea. Other simple but important tips for rosacea are to maintain a healthy, balanced diet and avoid harsh products.

5. Uneven skin tone

It is said that eliminating sugar from your diet is essential for improving skin tone and tone.

Kyle said, “Diets low in sugar have great benefits for the skin. With excess sugar, glycation takes place. Glycation is the process that occurs when sugars in the blood bind to proteins in the body and break them down, resulting in decreased collagen, accelerated aging of the skin, and hyperpigmentation.

Dr Humble recommends that a diet closer to a Mediterranean diet is best for the skin. He said, “The Med Diet has everything you need, includes superfoods, and is well balanced. It is relatively lower in carbohydrates (especially those with a high glycemic index, that is to say in sugars).
