Pimples and acne are the most common skin problems for men and women. It is a skin condition where hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells, causing blackheads and whiteheads. Although more common in teenagers due to puberty, it can also occur in young people in their twenties due to various lifestyle habits, stress, and hormonal imbalances.

Dermatologist Dr. Gurveen Waraich has shed some light on dietary supplements that can cause acne if taken in excess. In an Instagram video, she talked about three major supplements – biotin, vitamin B12 and whey protein. “Taking too many supplements?” the text in his video read.

She further explained that they are the cause of acnes as follows:

Biotin

This supplement is used primarily for the treatment of hair loss (to stop hair loss and strengthen hair). While it certainly helps with this, unregulated consumption of biotin can affect the body’s absorption of vitamin B5, which increases oil production. This in turn leads to acne breakouts.

Vitamin B12

Although the effects of vitamin B12 are not very common in terms of acne, in some people, vitamin B12 alters the skin microbiome, leading to acne breakouts with inflammation. This usually happens due to higher doses like injectable vitamin B12.

whey protein

The most common supplement responsible for acne in adults is whey protein. This supplement is most commonly used for muscle building by fit people. “Being a milk by-product, whey contains bovine insulin-like growth factor (IGF1) which increases sebum and androgen production leading to breakouts, especially in women with hormonal acne. “, says Dr. Gurveen.

She finally explained that while these are the most common supplements to cause acne, it is only with acne-prone skin that we see these effects and not otherwise. She added that there might be variations in how these supplements react in people with acne-prone skin.
