Starting an anti-aging skincare routine can seem daunting, but with a little persistence, you can reverse bad habits and improve the look and feel of your skin.
Around the age of 30, the body’s production of collagen slows down. Collagen plays an important role in the elasticity of our skin. When this production decreases, we tend to see our skin change with the addition of dark spots, sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles.
Although we cannot alter the natural aging process, we can influence another type of aging that occurs due to our environment and lifestyle choices. By taking certain preventive measures, we can slow down the effects that this type of aging has on our skin.
Here are six tips to keep your skin healthy and glowing:
• Apply a moisturizer with SPF 30. The importance of protecting our skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays cannot be overstated. You should wear a facial moisturizer with a minimum SPF of 30 daily. You can apply it to your face and neck to protect against accidental sun exposure. SPF also helps prevent collagen breakdown. In our 30s, we usually begin to notice the adverse effects of sun exposure beginning to show on our skin. Being proactive can really help minimize further damage.
• Use retinoids. Prescription and over-the-counter retinoids minimize the appearance of wrinkles and boost skin thickness and elasticity, slow collagen breakdown, and lighten dark spots caused by sun exposure. Retinoids work by prompting surface skin cells to turn over and die quickly, opening the way for new cells to grow underneath. They hinder the breakdown of collagen and thicken the deep layer of skin where wrinkles begin.
• Put on sunscreen. A study reveals that regular use of sunscreen protects against photoaging: wrinkles, spots and loss of elasticity caused by exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. The sun’s rays are most intense between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. So try not to expose yourself to the sun during this peak period. The FDA recommends applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to all uncovered skin.
• Stay hydrated. Drinking enough water is essential for overall skin health. Staying well hydrated keeps your skin hydrated, healthy and glowing. That’s not to mention all the other benefits of drinking enough H20. While eight 8-ounce glasses a day is the general guideline, water intake isn’t one size fits all, so listen to what your body needs.
• Eat healthy. Healthy eating can help you look and feel better. Optimize your nutrition by eating fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, healthy fats from oily fish and nuts, and a varied and balanced diet. This should provide you with optimal levels of nutrients essential for radiant skin, including beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, zinc and selenium.
• Stop smoking. Research has shown that smoking contributes to wrinkles and can make your skin look older. Not only does smoking deplete the skin of oxygen and nutrients, but it also reduces the elasticity of the skin. But there’s good news: quitting smoking can improve your appearance. As blood flow improves, your skin receives more oxygen and nutrients. It can help you develop a healthier complexion.
