Selena Gomez has an arsenal of products to help hide dark circles. There’s the $4 eye masks she uses to depuff, the caffeine-infused cream she applies every morning, and the Rare Beauty concealer that’s a staple in her routine. But the one product she swears by before a big event — when she has to make sure her eyes look their best and brightest for hours on end — happens to be something that’s been part of my personal routine for months: Olehenriksen’s Banana Bright Eye Cream ($40).

The team behind Gomez’s glamor revealed that she used the color correcting cream (alongside a host of other Olehenriksen products) to prep her skin for Sunday night’s Critics’ Awards — and from the point of considering the ingredients, it was a perfect choice. The formula is packed with skin-brightening vitamin C and offers both smoothing and color-correcting benefits to deliver precisely what the skin under your eyes needs to look (and stay) camera-ready.

The formula

As any dermis will tell you, vitamin C is the crème de la crème (no pun intended) for brightening skin and defending against free radical damage, which is one of the main causes of skin aging. . As a powerful antioxidant, it protects your cells from the damaging effects that exposure to sunlight and pollution can have over time.

Plus, it helps speed up the process of cell regeneration, which is essential for targeting dullness. “When cell turnover is slower, skin can appear duller, and vitamin C helps keep cell turnover from happening as quickly,” beauty dietitian Frances Phillips, RD, told Well + Good.

From a color correction perspective, Olehenriksen Eye Cream is designed to mimic the “banana powder” makeup artists often use to even out their clients’ skin tones. This translucent yellow-gold powder helps reduce the appearance of discoloration and dark circles, and Banana Cream has a similar tint that allows it to do the same. FYI, yellow can naturally help counteract and neutralize purple undertones, which is why it’s great for concealing dark circles.

First impressions

The first thing I noticed when I tried Olehenriksen eye cream is how pleasantly luminous it is. Its color correcting pigments have balanced my complexion. Although I don’t usually like to apply makeup immediately after my skincare products, this product is great for prepping skin before concealer or foundation (Gomez’s glam squad is clearly on to something) . Specifically, it kept my concealer from creasing and helped amplify its brightening effects.

Plus, the cream deserves a gold medal for hydration. It adds an instant burst of moisture, which stays for hours after application. When I apply it during my nighttime skincare regimen, the skin under my eyes still feels soft and supple the next day. It has a lightweight texture that allows it to easily penetrate deep into your skin’s layers – just a dab of product is all you need.

It should be noted that the product has a very slight citrus scent, but it’s subtle enough that it’s not a dealbreaker for me.

Is it worth it?

Overall the cream helped nourish and brighten my skin. I saw noticeable changes within the first week of use, and those results improved over the two months. Overall, my under-eye area felt more hydrated, less puffy, and brighter.

Although the cream can increase skin radiance over time (it certainly does for me), if you’re looking for immediate effects, I recommend pairing the product with concealer to hide dark circles.

Other beauty lovers also sang her praises. “This cream is amazing!” raves a Sephora reviewer. “I’ve tried, like, at least 20 different high-end eye creams over the past six months; this is the only one that’s actually worked. My bags under my eyes, dark circles, etc. disappeared, and it adds a natural luminosity.”

Another buyer echoed that sentiment, adding how effectively the cream targets puffiness and dullness. “I have to say that after trying several different eye creams, even from pharmacies, it’s truly magical. My eye area is noticeably brighter and the puffiness disappears,” they write.

Plus, if it’s good enough for Selena Gomez, it’s good enough for me.
