10 ferulic acid serums and skin care products for brighter skin in 2021

We love a good dose of acid, that is, in our skin care. There are several to choose from, but you are probably more familiar with these two: exfoliating glycolic and hydrating hyaluronic. However, there is one acid that we think is very underrated for its ability to make your products even better, and its name is ferulic acid.

According to New York-based certified dermatologist Hadley King, ferulic acid is an antioxidant naturally found in the walls of plant cells. She says to consider this ingredient as a helping hand for the rest of the assets and antioxidants in your skin care products, as research has proven its ability to stabilize several ingredients, such as vitamins C and E, so that ‘they can last longer without losing their potency. “The stability of antioxidants can be increased by adding other antioxidants,” says King.

“Ferulic acid is a powerful antioxidant, just like vitamin C,” adds cosmetic chemist Ginger King. “But vitamin C is not inherently stable, so when they work together they have a synergistic effect for maximum performance.”

Hadley King also suggests pairing ferulic acid with another skin care staple: sunscreen, especially with the American Academy of Dermatology recommended broad-spectrum SPF rating of 30 or higher. . “Sunscreens, mineral or chemical, help protect the skin from UV rays”, explains the dermatologist. “But if these ingredients are combined with antioxidants like ferulic acid, then the protection has been found to be greater because the antioxidants help neutralize free radicals from UV rays.” That’s why you can find ferulic acid in a few sunscreen formulas, like one of our favorites, Acure’s Radically Rejuvenating SPF 30 Day Cream.

You also won’t have to worry about having irritation or sensitivity issues with this ingredient, as Hadley King says all skin types can benefit from ferulic acid. However, its brightening benefits make it particularly useful for anyone suffering from dull skin, dark circles, and hyperpigmentation, which is why it’s commonly paired with vitamin C, another glow-boosting antioxidant.

If you’re ready to take your skincare to the next level, grab a few of these ferulic acid infused favorites, below.

AI, Personalization and Big Data Create Skincare Line ‘Proven’ to Work

The quest for healthy looking skin is daunting. Anyone struggling with an imperfect complexion is used to frequenting the skin care aisle at their local convenience store, perusing the endless array of solutions lining the shelves in search of potential solutions. The untold time and money spent on this trial and error approach could have been spent on more enjoyable activities if they had found an effective product compatible with their skin and its changing needs.

Ming Zhao, CEO and Founder of Proven Skincare, is no stranger to this narrative and the frustration associated with unsuccessful attempts to correct her problematic skin and damage to self-esteem. As a private equity investor in her twenties, the 14-hour workdays she spent evaluating investment opportunities began to reflect on her face. She felt like she had aged a decade.

“I would wake up engulfed and withered, and at that point, I needed to do something drastically different with my skin,” Zhao recalled in a phone interview with

While most other skin care products on the market tout the so-called miracles they perform for all skin types, Ming says those claims sounded implausible, especially given the frequently reported low level of satisfaction. among consumers.

“I invested a lot of money in all these one-size-fits-all products, and thought there must be a better way,” she recalls.

A visit to a skin care specialist provided Zhao with a personalized skin care routine that started seeing “great results.” It was a diet worth the investment, she said.

The birth of the proven

This eureka moment inspired the Harvard Business School graduate to contact her friend, Dr Amy Yuan, a computational physicist at Stanford University. They began to look at environmental factors and other culprits that could be taking a toll on her skin.

“We later learned that so many factors impact the skin,” Zhao said. “I lived in Hong Kong and had different exposure to UV, blue light and pollution, different water hardness, and different stress levels. One-size-fits-all products did not address these issues at the individual level.

Yuan accepted and became Zhao’s business partner.

The proven three-step regimen includes a multitasking cleanser, SPF day moisturizer, and night cream.

Harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI), personalization and big data, the duo – who then recruited dermatology consultant Dr Tyler Hollmig and formulation consultant Dr Nick Conley to train their team – surveyed scientific literature, consumer reviews and social media comments that feed their algorithm to discover skin care agents that work.

Their research resulted in a Herculean venture called The Skin Genome Project, which business partners call the world’s most comprehensive skin care database. Comprising 25 million consumer testimonials, 100,000 products, 20,000 ingredients and 4,000 peer-reviewed scientific articles, the project has led to the development of personalized, cruelty-free formulas for each individual’s skin care concerns. The project won the 2018 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Artificial Intelligence Award.

All these data underline Proven’s slogan: “one size fits all. ”

Potential proven skincare customers take the brand’s skin genome quiz. The online request only takes a few minutes. He asks specific questions aimed at answering his main skin care concerns; including acne, rosacea, rough skin, dark circles and wrinkles. The quiz also addresses skin sensitivity level, ethnicity and lifestyle, to get answers on screen time, diet, and stress levels. It also asks for a zip code, apparently to determine the UV index, pollution levels and other environmental factors. The active ingredients of Vitamin E in Ginseng Extract and Salicylic Acid are populated as users complete the questionnaire to start formulating products to meet specific skin needs.

When applicants are finished, they are given a personalized three-step daily regimen. The cleanser cleanses, tones, exfoliates and maximizes nutrient absorption from the second product, an SPF day moisturizer. Finally, a night cream with equal parts moisturizer and serum that should be applied just before sleeping, when the skin is in repair mode. According to Proven, this diet aims to improve the skin microbiome while eliminating each user’s individual skin issues. The products are packaged in futuristic silver bottles.

According to the results of an independent clinical study, 81% of users reported that their skin was “well hydrated” after following the Proven program. And 77% of people reported a brighter, more glowing complexion after 30 days.

Proven goes public

Three and a half years after its inception, Proven’s big data idea has paid off. In addition to winning the MIT award, company executives made an appearance on Shark Tank, although no sharks took a bite of the hook. Still, with $ 24 million in revenue in less than two years, Proven is preparing to issue an IPO on the Nasdaq.

Profits will go to exploring the market for AI talent, investing in AI innovation and research and development of new products. Proven’s public listing follows the company’s intention to expand into other wellness categories with a new wave of revolutionary products that founders and relatively new mothers are adding to their brand. These include supplements, cosmetics, and hair and baby care products.

“The main reason we wanted to have this crowdfunding campaign is to empower consumers to own Proven and participate in and continue to create value,” Zhao said.

Fall skin care products to add to your routine

WWhen the fall weather arrives, that means cozy cups of tea, crunchy leaves, and fresh air filled with outdoor activities. But the change in seasons that usher in apple and pumpkin picking usually comes with big changes for your skin as well.

“With the seasonal changes come changes in humidity, and during the colder months this can make our skin more prone to dryness,” says Caroline Robinson, MD FAAD, Certified Dermatologist and Founder of Tone Dermatology. “Updating your skin care with the seasons can be very important in keeping your skin balanced. “

How do you determine what types of fall skin care products you need, you ask? The key is to look for signs that your skin might need some support. For example, if you usually have acne during cold seasons, your skin may tell you it’s dehydrated (more on the acne-dehydration link below).

To help you identify your skin’s needs (and the products that can help you), we asked Dr. Robinson to shed some light on three of the most common skin care issues she sees in the fall, as well. than the ingredients she usually relies on to help her. Product-wise, we’ve handpicked five NOW® Solutions beauty products to meet every need, so you and your skin can easily fit into your new fall routine and start enjoying pumpkin season again.

Read on to find out what your skin needs for the season, as well as fall skin care products that can help.

Buy NOW® Skin Care Solutions

Skin need: Dryness

“Dryness is one of the most common skin problems I hear about during the fall and winter months,” says Dr. Robinson. A few factors can contribute to drought, especially when humidity levels drop, resulting in drier air.

To keep skin supple and balanced, Dr. Robinson recommends daily moisturizer, adding an exfoliant rich in glycolic, lactic, or mandelic acid, and really boosting hydration by using hyaluronic acid once a day.

“Hyaluronic acid is an important hydrating compound made up of sugars, both natural and present in the human body,” she says. “In our skin, it powerfully attracts moisture in the deeper layers. In skin care, it is especially useful for drier skin because it hydrates and draws water to the skin at the same time. “

It only takes a spritz or two to get your daily dose of hyaluronic acid with NOW® Solutions Hyaluronic Acid Hydration Facial Mist, which contains aloe vera and fruit extract to nourish the skin. Or go the inside-out route with NOW® Hydration Rescue Plant-Based Capsules, which combine hyaluronic acid and collagen to support healthy skin hydration.

Skin need: Acne

While you might assume that drier weather could be beneficial for oily, acne-prone skin, it doesn’t, says Dr. Robinson.

“The vicious cycle of dryness and dehydration that often accompanies the change of seasons can cause our skin to compensate with an overproduction of sebum, which can lead to clogged pores and worsening acne,” she says. “Two of my favorite over-the-counter ingredients for helping with rashes (before seeing your dermatologist) are benzoyl peroxide and retinol.”

If you prefer a plant-based version of retinol, try NOW® Solutions Bakuchiol Skin Renewal Serum to infuse hydration (and help combat that over-dehydration) while gently targeting complexion issues like tight skin, tight skin, fine lines and clogged pores.

Skin need: Patchy skin

Sunscreen is basically synonymous with summer, but Dr Robinson says SPF shouldn’t be packed with your summer wardrobe, especially if you’re concerned about your skin texture.

“After the summer months, when we are more outdoors, we may start to notice irregularities and dark spots on the skin,” says Dr. Robinson. “The biggest mistake I see here is that people stop using sunscreen at the end of summer due to the false perception that the sun is less intense during the colder months. products that help improve skin tone is useless without daily sun protection. “

She suggests applying a sunscreen of at least SPF 30, broad spectrum, and water resistant daily as part of your skin care routine. Another ingredient that pairs well with SPF and can help alleviate skin irregularities? Vitamin C.

“Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps even out skin for a natural glow,” says Dr. Robinson, and you can get it in NOW® Solutions Vitamin C + Ferulic Acid Serum, which is formulated to support lightening. , tightening and improvement. the appearance of uneven skin tone. And if you really want to take brightening support to the next level, layer it morning and night with NOW® Solutions Glutathione Skin Brightener ™ Cream. Who said glowing skin was only for summer?

5 Important Skin Care Facts You Should Know

# 4 cleansing, moisturizing and protecting are the most important

When it comes to defending our skin against five signs of sensitivity and keeping it healthy and happy, you can throw the old “clean, tone, moisturize” out the window.

The real heroes? ‘Cleanse, moisturize, protect’.

Good skin care begins with gentle cleansing and Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser ($ 7.69 for 250 ml at Chemist warehouse) is hard to beat – it actually hydrates as it cleanses. In addition, it is dermatologically tested to be suitable for the most sensitive skin types.

The cleansing should then be followed by a rich hydration. Note that “rich” does not necessarily mean “heavy”. Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream ($ 15.99 for 550g at Chemist warehouse) doubles the skin’s hydration level in 24 hours and fully restores the skin’s moisture barrier in just one week (with a twice daily application), while absorbing easily into the skin.

Finally, since we have the highest levels of UV radiation in the world, we Australians need SPF protection all year round. Fortunately, Cetaphil also has sensitive skin covered in Cetaphil Sun SPF 50+ Ultra Light Lotion ($ 15.99 per 100ml at Chemist warehouse) – both gentle on sensitive skin and with the highest possible SPF level of protection.

15 cult skin care products that dermatologists still use

The term “cult favorite” is often used in beauty – but a brief animated moment does it. not cult skin care product brand. What? A list of featured ingredients, for one. A legion of adoring fans. A proven formula (because you don’t just develop worship overnight). And I would say dermatologist approval is also on that list of requirements. law? These 15 cult skincare products – from an iconic eye cream to a celebrity-beloved serum – check out all the boxes.

The official list of derm favorites includes familiar names, of course. “La Mer Crème de la Mer Moisturizer is the moisturizer of all moisturizers,” Dr. Aanand Geria, dermatologist at Geria Dermatology in New Jersey, told TZR. The price reflects the hype: A two-ounce jar of La Mer’s formula costs $ 325… or die-hard fans can oversize their order and score 16.5 ounces for $ 2,160. On the other end of the spectrum, you have finds under the radar (and under $ 11), like Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. “It has calming, oil-absorbing, acne-treating, and pore-minimizing benefits,” Dr. Joshua Zeichner of Zeichner Dermatology in New York City told TZR; prove that “cult favorite” does not necessarily mean “cost prohibitive”.

Drunk elephant

Let’s go, 15 buzzy beauty products that dermatologists agree Actually job.

We only include products that have been independently selected by TZR’s editorial team. However, we may receive a portion of the sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.

Neutrogena Bright Boost Resurfacing Micropolish

“A blend of my favorite AHAs, glycolic acid and mandelic acid, this drugstore scrub is great for uneven skin tone, dark spots, and dull, rough skin,” says board certified dermatologist Dr. Hope Mitchell.

Laneige Lips Sleep Mask

In 2015, Laneige upgraded the lip mask overnight scene. Priced at just $ 22, this gel-cream texture plumps, hydrates and soothes lips overnight for an incredibly soft result.

Glow Recipe Avocado Melt Retinol Eye Mask

You can hardly walk to a beauty publisher or a home obsessed with skincare without seeing bottles of Sacred Glow Recipe’s famous eye cream. Filled with avocado, encapsulated retinol and coffee berries, this small but potent cream will illuminate, reduce and treat the appearance of dark circles.

Freck Cactus Water

Fairly new to the scene, launched earlier this year, Freck’s Cactus Water is a glossy, lactic acid cleansing toner that looks like water, acts like water, but does so much more. Formulated with lactic acid and a plethora of plant and plant extracts, the toner balances and promotes skin uniformity.

Elta MD Tinted Sunscreen

“This sunscreen doubles as a winter sunscreen and foundation. During the winter months, when the sun’s rays are weaker and I’m not as often outdoors, this sunscreen provides sufficient sun protection. During the summer months, I like to layer my sunscreen for extra protection, so this product becomes my base for sun protection. I love this formula because it also doubles as a protection and foundation. Plus, it’s super light, which makes the application process pleasant, ”says Dr. Orit Markowitz, a board-certified dermatologist for the City of New York.

Humphreys Nourish Witch Hazel + Aloe Toner Without Alcohol

“As the season turns to cooler weather, I love using Humphreys Nourish Nourish Witch Hazel + Aloe Alcohol Free Toner to gently nourish dry skin. It contains certified organic witch hazel as the first ingredient, which means the plant’s natural potency is preserved, undiluted, or polluted with harmful ingredients. The alcohol-free formula is also enriched with organic aloe and vitamin E to help hydrate and soften even sensitive skin. It’s great to include it in your daily routine before a moisturizer, or take it as a mist to reapply as needed to cool you down during the day, ”says certified dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman.

Organic Research Milk P50

“Even though this product smells of vinegar, people have been drawn to it for over four decades because it’s an incredible exfoliant,” says Dr. Geria. “The craze is also about its anti-inflammatory and anti-acne properties – not to mention the fact that it contains many natural and rare ingredients like onion and horseradish extract.” Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) dissolve dead skin cells on contact, but what really brings out the P50? “It also contains ingredients that replenish hydration, strengthen the skin barrier and balance the skin’s pH,” Dr. Sejal Shah, founder of SmarterSkin Dermatology, told TZR.

Granted, this much-loved formula can be a bit harsh, so the original version is not recommended for acid beginners. “The range comes with several different versions for sensitive or beginner skin types, such as P50 V,” says Dr Zeichner. Want to try it out for yourself? The exclusive French brand only sells through its spa affiliates, so create a (free) account at Rescue Spa to place an order.

Drunk Elephant TLC Sukari Babyfacial

“I love this product for targeting bumpy skin and texture issues,” certified dermatologist Dr. Sabrina Uddin told TZR. “It contains a great combination of AHA and BHA to help smooth the surface of the skin and lighten the skin in general. Babyfacial is formulated with hyaluronic acid, which hydrates the skin, in addition to acids which act as exfoliators. This makes the product much more tolerable than just applying AHA or BHA.

The derm recommends using the mask once a week for best results – join in the fun on Insta every “#babyfacialsundayfor your weekly correction. Bonus: “Drunk Elephant as a brand is known for its clean ingredients, and this product is just that,” says Dr Geria.

Charlotte Tilbury Charlotte Magic Cream

Charlotte Tilbury is best known for her line of cosmetics, but the makeup artist’s moisturizer is often cited as the top product in the line – for good reason. “Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream contains a blend of humectant and emollient ingredients to soften the skin,” says Dr. Zeichner. “It also contains a skin-strengthening peptide and antioxidants to calm and protect.” Dr Shah adds that it’s not just for moisturizing, however – she says it treats the signs of aging and “instantly plumps and smoothes the skin”, thanks to the hyaluronic acid. Magical indeed.

Ole Henriksen Banana Luminous Eye Cream

“Talk about hydration,” says Dr. Uddin. “I have been using this eye cream for about eight months now and notice that on the days I use it my concealer slips off like a dream. The combination of jojoba seed oil, shea butter, glycerin and dimethicone creates a powerful moisturizing effect. It prevents the skin from forming pesky wrinkles around the eyes. I think Vitamin C helps even out the complexion around the eyes, but I think the key to how this cream works is in moisturizing the area under the eyes. Plus, a little goes a long way – so the price is actually quite reasonable. “

Strawberry-C Volition Serum

“We have to thank Marilyn Monroe for this one, as she was known to rub her face with strawberries,” says Dr. Geria. “This brand ran with this idea and later learned that strawberries are loaded with vitamin C; give that bright, radiant glow that everyone is looking for. Monroe was definitely on to something – Volition’s Strawberry-C serum sold out at Sephora almost upon launch. (Fortunately, it’s back in stock, so you’ll need to click “Add to Cart” as soon as possible.)

Sunday Riley Good Genes

Clearly, the dermis are on board with acidic scrubs; they suggest this one from Sunday Riley for those with sensitive skin. “Good Genes only uses [lactic acid] AHAs, which is good because they are considered safe during pregnancy; as opposed to BHAs, which we generally don’t recommend due to the lack of safety data, ”Dr Uddin told TZR. “If you have sensitive skin, I recommend you rinse off after 10 to 15 minutes and apply your moisturizer.” The dermatologist herself uses it in combination with Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip Cleanser as a “facial flash”. “It’s a great 10-minute pre-event highlighter,” she says. “I’ve used it that way and love the general brightening.”

Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum

“This is a perfectly organized serum that contains countless herbs and even better, a thoughtful delivery system,” says Dr Geria. “You ‘push and squeeze’ into the skin to ensure proper and adequate absorption for a healthy, radiant glow. Besides the dermis, Vintner’s Daughter Active Botanical Serum is endorsed by celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Tracee Ellis Ross. At $ 185, it’s not cheap … but it is is, apparently it’s worth it.

Aztec Secret Indian Clay Healing Mask

The only skin care product that consistently makes its way into Amazon derms carts? That $ 11 mask called “the world’s most powerful face” … a title experts surprisingly agree with. “This contains bentonite clay which helps remove debris, excess oil and other impurities from the skin,” Dr Shah told TZR. “It’s perfect for oily and acne-prone skin. It can still be used if you have dry or sensitive skin, but use it with caution as it can dry out.

La Mer Crème de la Mer Moisturizing Cream

“Crème de la mer contains a variety of natural oils as well as seaweed extracts to hydrate and calm the skin,” says Dr. Zeichner. “While many products contain similar types of ingredients, there is something about the quality of the formulation that makes it superior and cultured.”

This “something” would be the exclusive broth of the brand. “The secret lies in the Miracle de La Mer broth, a specific way of combining the brand’s ingredients,” explains Dr Geria. “It’s perfect for those with extremely dry skin looking for a smooth, hydrated feel.”

Pietro Simone’s new line of skin care essentials is ‘fierce’ and effective

The term “clean beauty” does not seem to have a clear and singular definition. For this reason, there is often a lot of confusion around the term, what it really means, and the intent behind the products marketed as such. For Italian skin care expert Pietro Simone, clean beauty is simply an effective, no-frills approach to skin. “My goal is to avoid ingredients that are unnecessary or have the potential to become negative for the skin,” he told TZR. “I really believe in evolution and therefore my formulations are constantly evolving to deliver new, greener and more effective results.” Its latest collection of skincare essentials, the FIERCE Collection, is free from artificial colors, essential oils and a host of other ingredients that are generally considered “unclean” – not just for the purposes of marketing, but in order to provide the strongest possible performance.

I saw – and felt – these formulas in action when I visited Simone’s New York studio for a facial using the FIERCE collection. I warned him that my skin is ultra-sensitive and prone to reaction, fully expecting to come away with a red, itchy face (as I usually do after a facial). Aside from a clarifying mask, I barely felt my skin tingle during the treatment, but it was clear that these products still had a punch. The hormonal pimple on my chin had noticeably decreased in size and redness, and my skin looked plump and radiant – as if it had been drinking a lot of water.

Although Simone evaluated my skin before starting and selected the products accordingly (we focused on hydration), the 18-piece kit is designed to be suitable for all skin types and all stages of life. . “People generally select their skin care products based on their biological age, and I wanted to create something that was accessible to everyone,” he says. The collection responds to skin problems that can occur at all stages of life (acne, rosacea, irritations) as well as menopause and hormonal imbalances.

There are some noteworthy ingredients in the FIERCE Collection formulas, powered by revolutionary skin drone technology, which helps them penetrate deeper into the skin so you see more benefits, faster. Unlike other vitamin C products which oxidize quickly and therefore become unstable, Simone uses the main vitamin C glutathione, an ingredient that is stabilized and 100% penetrable.

The bio-fermented reishi compound helps fight hyperpigmentation and prevent other blemishes by increasing the skin’s natural regenerating and healing properties. And, of course, no skin care collection would be complete without retinol. Simone’s Star Retinol formulation, however, contains a natural biodegradable lipid carrier, which means the risk of irritation is much lower. This advanced retinol improves scarring, minimizes pores, and tackles multiple signs of aging, including environmental aging and thinning skin.

You may notice that one of the hottest ingredients in the skin care world, glycolic acid, is nowhere to be found in the collection. Simone is known for his tough stance on the popular AHA scrub, which he laughs at when I mention. He says he doesn’t have a vendetta against the ingredient, he just never found it to be extremely effective. “I never felt like I had great results,” he says. “Many products on the market today, such as peels, could incorporate glycolic acid into the product, but that won’t be the only working ingredient. “

Another of Simone’s hot takes? Don’t mix up your skin care brands. That’s not the most realistic advice – especially for a beauty writer whose job it is to try a lot of products – but he explains that it’s really the best way to test a product’s effectiveness. “If someone is using several different brands at the same time, it’s much more difficult to determine what works best for your skin,” he says. “My collections are meticulously bio-designed to create lasting results, and you can see them very quickly, but if you mix too many products, those effects can be delayed or obscured.”

But don’t panic, Simone concedes that mixing skincare brands isn’t a deadly sin; rather, it must be done with care. “For example, I will not mix an organic brand that uses essential oil with a brand that uses active ingredients and retinol, because I have seen the skin being stressed by the multiple categories of active ingredients superimposed”, he said.

And that’s basically the philosophy behind Pietro Simone’s skin care – removing unnecessary and potentially irritating ingredients so your skin only gets what it really needs.

The complete FIERCE collection, which includes body treatments, is available on Amazon.

Drunk Elephant Vitamin C-Firma Serum is a Skin Care Classic – Here’s Why

Prior to launching her cult skin care brand Drunk Elephant and flagship product, Vitamin C-Firma Serum, founder Tiffany Masterson was a busy mother raising four children while simultaneously dealing with skin issues like rosacea. slight, redness, oiliness in the T-zone, and large pores. “I looked for a solution to my combination, sensitive skin, but nothing seemed to fix the problem for a long time,” Masterson shares. “I started researching the ingredients of the products I was using and noticed the role each played and, more importantly, the reaction of my skin. I realized that it was the marketing ingredients (those in a formula that make it look better, smell better, or feel better that have no benefit to the skin) that needed to go away.

With this in mind, Masterson began to imagine an alternative to the products currently on the market, and eventually Drunk Elephant was born. “My vision for Drunk Elephant was to build the brand by totally avoiding the six suspects – essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical sunscreens, perfumes / dyes and SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) – and using only biocompatible ingredients. that have direct benefit to the skin itself, “says the founder.” So many people think their skin problems are permanent, but often they are simply caused by the very ingredients we use on a daily basis.

The brand’s Vitamin C Serum was one of six original products launched with the debut of Drunk Elephant in 2013. Formulated with 15% L-Ascorbic Acid (a very potent form of Vitamin C), 0.5 % Ferulic Acid and 1% Vitamin E, the serum can be used daily to reverse and prevent free radical damage, revealing a brighter, firmer and more even complexion. High potency was quite unknown at the time and remains one of the main options for vitamin C over 10% on the market. But it was the airtight packaging (which maintained the shelf life of the chronically unstable vitamin C derivative) that sealed the deal for many beauty consumers and publishers.

Eight years later, in August 2021, C-Firma received a facelift with the same benefits as before, but with a deconstructed formula now known as C-Firma Fresh. “When we started selling globally, I had a feeling our customers weren’t getting the freshest C-Firma possible (it takes longer to ship overseas),” said Masterson at TZR. “For L-ascorbic acid to decrease the signs of sun damage, fight free radicals, and truly brighten the skin, it needs to have the right pH, be surrounded by the right ingredients, and be stable. It is not easy. So we had the idea to deconstruct it.

To make this possible, the new C-Firma Fresh formula comes in two vials – a powder that the user mixes with the liquid solution before applying to the skin. Essentially, the consumer is the mixologist. Although the packaging has not changed from the original C-Firma to C-Firma Fresh, the difference is in the two bottles. When you receive the product, you just need to mix the two once to get the full benefits.

“We separated the vitamin C in powder form to maximize its potency and keep this notoriously delicate ingredient in its freshest and most stable form,” says Masterson. “[The] two vials preserve the freshness of L-ascorbic acid, allowing the consumer to control the shelf life of the product. You do it yourself, only once – and it never touches the air [prior to that], so it’s as fresh as it gets. The pump then removes all the oxygen from the formula after a few uses. As Masterson says, “Vacuum pump airless packaging technology adds an extra layer of safety that a traditional dropper cannot provide.

The serum – which has a six-month shelf life and does not need to be refrigerated – also contains pumpkin ferment extract and sodium hyaluronate to help enzymatically dissolve dead skin cells. skin by moisturizing and soothing. Other beneficial ingredients include “pomegranate extract for additional exfoliating benefits, extract of vitis vinifera (grape juice), which contains vitamin E and polyphenols, and Indian gooseberry for additional antioxidant benefits.” The new formulation results in a noticeably diminished appearance of signs of aging and photo-replaced damage with shine and luminosity, ”says Masterson.

Other improvements to the beloved serum include a lower pH level (3.3-2.5) to increase vitamin C penetration and potency and change the formula to vegan, whereas the original formula contained a shell extract. Coupled with the increased stability of the powder formula, the new and improved C-Firma Fresh is poised to remain one of the most trusted and revered vitamin C products on the market.
