But that’s not aloe’s only superpower. “Aloe is an unpretentious plant,” says registered dietitian Beth Czerwony, RD. “It doesn’t really seem to be that special. But it can actually provide many benefits.

Believe it or not, drinking aloe vera juice is one of the best ways to reap the health benefits of the plant.

What is aloe vera juice?

Making aloe vera juice is a very simple process.

Start by pulling several leaves from healthy, mature aloe vera plants. Think of them as pillows – only instead of down or feathers, sheets are a gel-filled cushion.

Then carefully cut the leaves. Extract the gel you see and mix it with water. Presto – now you have delicious aloe vera juice to sip.

That this simple drink offers so many health benefits may be hard to believe. But Czerwony notes that its simplicity is a plus. Unlike aloe vera lotions, the impact of aloe vera juice is not diluted by chemicals, perfumes or other substances.

“Aloe vera juice itself is much more potent,” she says. “If we look at the properties, you’ll get more for your money with the juice than if you use it topically.”

Benefits of aloe vera juice

Above all, aloe vera juice contains antioxidants or substances that help reduce your risk of developing diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. But aloe vera juice offers benefits beyond simple prevention.

A low-calorie, low-sugar option

Regular juices aren’t always healthy. Not all contain a high percentage of real fruit, to begin with. Many also added sugar – and lots of it. Aloe vera juice, however, is a healthy option. Czerwony says an eight-ounce serving isn’t high in protein, fat, or carbs, but is only eight calories and low in sugar. “It’s pretty neutral,” Czerwony notes. “You can drink it on its own or you can put it in your smoothies.”

Helps brighten the skin

It may sound counterintuitive, but you often develop acne because you’re dehydrated. As a result, your skin produces more sebum, which leads to acne breakouts. “If you drink aloe vera juice, you’re going to hydrate yourself,” says Czerwony. “It’s going to give your skin extra moisture, so you’re less likely to get acne.”

Relieves constipation

If you are constipated, good news. The texture of aloe vera juice can affect the consistency of your poo, especially making it softer.

Reduces heartburn

Heartburn happens when acid from your stomach backs up into your esophagus. The results of a small 2015 study showed that aloe vera juice can alleviate some of the acid in your stomach that causes heartburn.

Maintain eye health

Aloe vera juice is loaded with beta-carotene, an antioxidant commonly found in orange and yellow vegetables and fruits. Your body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A, a vitamin linked to overall eye health.

Increase your intake of certain vitamins and minerals

Aloe vera juice contains vitamin C – a versatile vitamin that helps with immune function, for example – as well as calcium and magnesium. “Many people with muscle pain often have low levels of calcium and magnesium,” says Czerwony. “Drinking aloe vera juice could replenish them if your diet is low on them.”

How much aloe vera juice should you drink?

As with anything delicious, be careful not to overdo it. Czerwony says one cup of aloe vera juice a day is a good limit. “Drinking more isn’t necessarily going to give you more benefits,” she says.

She also recommends drinking a small amount of aloe vera juice at first to see how your body tolerates it. “Whenever there’s a sudden change in your diet, your body is going to say, ‘What’s going on?'” notes Czerwony. “You want to start slow because you really don’t know how the body is going to react to aloe vera juice.”

Once you decide to start drinking aloe vera juice, you must also decide Why you take this step. “What is the end result you hope for? If you’re introducing aloe vera juice into your diet, it’s a good idea to check in with yourself and track how you feel once you start. “If you take it every day for weeks and you don’t see any benefit, then don’t do it,” says Czerwony. “Don’t put extra stuff in your body if it doesn’t benefit you.”

Above all, consulting your doctor before making drastic changes to your diet is also always a good idea. “Any time you try something different, let your doctor know,” advises Czerwony. “If you have sudden abdominal cramps and you don’t know why, it could be aloe vera juice. You may not even realize it is what it is. But if your doctor knows that you have changed your diet, he may tell you to stop.

“People think if something is natural, you can have as many as you want,” she adds. “I always tell people that just because something is natural doesn’t mean it can’t have harmful side effects.”
